A katana is made from high-quality steel. After the smith forges and shapes the blade, it goes through a critical heat treatment process called yaki-ire. The smith covers the blade partially with layers of wet clay slurry, with thicker layers on the body and spine of the blade and thinner layers on the edge. The blade is then heated and quickly quenched in water, which causes the different zones of the sword to cool at a different rate. This gives the blade its unique curved shape and creates the visible temper line, or Hamon, on the edge of the sword.
The handle of a katana is composed of several parts, including the Tsuba (blade collar), Habaki (square metal blade collar) and Fuchi (a square metal piece that contributes to the integrity of the hilt).
